Xiaomi has presented wireless charging technology for smartphones that, thanks to a powerful antenna array, supply the battery with power from several meters away. In the future, Xiaomi would like to use the technology to create a wireless living room in which all devices are supplied with power by radio from a central base station.

The battery of many smartphone models has been able to be charged wirelessly for several years. Until now, however, the devices have to be positioned on a charger for wireless charging, so they can only be used to a limited extent during the charging process. Now the Chinese electronics manufacturer Xiaomi, which is best known for its smartphones, has presented a new technology that enables charging at a distance of several meters from the base station.

The Xiaomi charger can be positioned anywhere. A transmitter unit integrated into the smartphone permanently transmits the position to the base station. This includes several directional antennas and 144 smaller antennas that send millimetre waves. The transmission direction is determined by beam forming, a method for determining position. In the smartphone, an array of 14 receiving antennas converts the signals from the charging station into electrical energy, which is used to charge the battery.

5-watt charging power

According to Xiaomi, the maximum charging power is 5 watts. This corresponds roughly to the performance of conventional wireless charging stations but is significantly below the performance of wired and wireless fast charging solutions. In view of the almost permanent charging process when staying near the charging station, the lower performance is not a real disadvantage.

No interruption of the charging process

According to Xiaomi, the charging process is not interrupted even by a physical barrier. The technology would be superior to a similar development by Motorola, which can charge wirelessly over several meters, but would interrupt the process if, for example, a person were to walk between the transmitter and receiver.

Wireless living room

In the future, Xiaomi would like to integrate the new charging technology into laptops, smartwatches, and other mobile devices. According to the company from China, a completely wireless living room is conceivable, in which lamps, loudspeakers, and other electrical devices are also supplied with power wirelessly from a central base station.
